Donald R. Brake, Fairfield, Obituary, Death: In Loving Memory of Donald R. Brake

It is with deep respect and heartfelt sadness that we remember the life of Donald R. “Don” Brake, 91, of Fairfield, who passed away at 3:25 a.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital Skilled Care Unit. His passing marks the end of a long, meaningful life defined by dedication to family, education, community service, and quiet generosity.

Born on October 21, 1934, in Albion, Illinois, Don Brake was the son of Clifford and Nina (Tait) Brake. He pursued higher education at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, graduating in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. Shortly after, he married the love of his life, Susan (Childers) Brake, on March 29, 1958—a partnership that would span decades and stand as one of the central joys of his life.

Don devoted much of his professional career to education, serving as a 7th grade science teacher and shop instructor in Fairfield Public School District 112. He was not only an educator but also a mentor who inspired curiosity and creativity in his students. His passion for learning extended beyond the classroom, as he nurtured interests in stamp collecting, leading him to establish a stamp club at Center Street School, a legacy that continued for years.

A man of wide-ranging interests, Don embraced life fully. He enjoyed fishing, camping, cooking, walking, and traveling with his wife, Susan. Together, they visited all 50 states and several countries, sharing cruises and adventures that reflected their love of discovery. He also explored genealogy, crafted stained glass pieces, supported local youth through Boy Scouts, and actively participated in his community through Kiwanis and hospital volunteer work.

Don’s commitment to service extended to his church and community life. At Cornerstone Community Church in Fairfield, he was known for his warm spirit and willingness to serve—whether cooking for Thanksgiving dinners, participating in “Foodtastic Fridays,” or feeding local high school students. His kindness often expressed itself in simple but meaningful acts, such as preparing meals for others or supporting community programs.

Above all, Don Brake was a family man. He found his greatest joy in his wife Susan, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy is carried forward in the lives of those he loved and supported.

He is survived by his wife Susan, his children Stephen and Jennifer, his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, and siblings.

A funeral service for Don Brake will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026, at Cornerstone Community Church in Fairfield, with burial to follow in Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Don’s life stands as a testament to steady devotion, quiet service, and enduring love. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him, and may he rest in peace.
